Lesson at University of Tirana

On 23.10.2020, PhD Denard Veshi, as UNYT representative, made an external dissemination to students at the University of Tirana. In other words, PhD Veshi spoke about EU values by focusing on the protection of refugee rights. The lesson went into analyzing into details the right to asylum under the coherence between the Albanian and the EU law and through the application of a law and economics approach. PhD Veshi presented the different variables that impact on the refugee decision making to decide to become a refugee, an economic migrant or an illegal migration. Moreover, PhD Veshi presented his research in medical law under the UNYT research pillar: Democracy and Social and Cultural Change.
The abstract of his presentation is the following:
This research aims to analyse refugee flow through a law and economics lens. This study offers a short historical overview of the creation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In addition, a law and economics model is applied. Some of the most important variables that impact the refugee decision-making process are then explored as well as the most important “push” factors that impact lawmakers in enacting and modifying refugee laws (e.g. protection of national security and the safeguarding of the national job market). Afterwards, the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees is discussed, delving into the main factors for its ratification and compliance. Then brought forth is a study of the economic advantages and disadvantages of a centralized supernational asylum law (acquis communautaire) that may result in the elimination of competition between legal orders in refugee law and the removal of negative externalities caused by “asylum shopping”. To sum up, international refugee law is critically analysed through a multidisciplinary approach.
